Tōri-en 東林苑

The Tōri-en Japanese garden and tea houses at Jinseki International School in Japan is a special space for students of the School, it is used for traditional Japanese tea ceremonies and extracurricular activities. It is an expansive facility covering approximately 33,000 square metres, and is regarded by visiting international guests as the heart of the School. Jinseki International School is Asia’s premier international junior boarding school located near Hiroshima, Japan.

Tōrin-en is a strolling pond-and-stream-style Japanese garden covering approximately 33,000 square metres, designed by Mr. Kinzaku Nakane, who is often referred to as the Enshū Kobori of the Shōwa era. It also features four tea houses designed by Mr. Masao Nakamura, a leading authority on Japanese architecture, and offers beautiful scenery in harmony with the natural seasons; it is an indispensable part of the School, which cherishes the spirit of Japanese culture.

Mr. Kinsaku Nakane

A leading landscape architect and garden designer of the Shōwa era. Known as the Kobori Enshū of the Shōwa era, he was responsible for over 300 gardens both in Japan and abroad, including the restoration of the Kyōko Pond at Kinkaku-ji Temple and the garden at the Adachi Museum of Art. He also served as President of Osaka University of Arts, blending traditional Japanese garden techniques with contemporary spatial designs.

Mr. Masao Nakamura

An architectural historian and researcher specialising in Japanese gardens, particularly tea houses and Sukiya-style architecture. In addition to the conservation and restoration of historic buildings, he has been involved in the construction and design of numerous traditional Japanese reception facilities, such as the Kyoto State Guest House, as well as tea houses.

In 2026, The Crescent Garden Foundation contributed towards the restoration of the Tōrin-en to ensure that this Showa-era masterpiece by Mr. Nakane and Mr. Nakamura remains in a formidable state for future generations of students of the School.
