CRESCENT GARDEN:
origin of our name and Mark
12 Wong Nai Chung Road, Hong Kong
The name “Crescent Garden” is derived from the location of the Siu family’s principal residence throughout much of the 20th century - a two-storey, European-style house situated at No. 12 Wong Nai Chung Road, adjacent to the Happy Valley Racecourse in Hong Kong.
That site has since been redeveloped into a public park under the stewardship of the Hong Kong Government, and is now officially named as Wong Nai Chung Road Crescent Garden. The designation is presumed to reference the distinctive crescent shape of the site, which follows the curve of the Racecourse’s perimeter.
The photograph above, dating from the 1970s, depicts the row of European-style residences located at Nos. 8, 9, and 10 Wong Nai Chung Road. The Siu family residence at No. 12, though partially cropped, can be seen at the far right margin of the image.
The Foundation’s mark similarly takes inspiration from the shape of this iconic site in Hong Kong; a symbol of our roots, continuity and belonging.
